4-Aminopyridine

4-Aminopyridine is a potassium-channel-blocking compound used medically as fampridine to improve walking in multiple sclerosis.

Where Does It Come From?

4-Aminopyridine is a naturally occurring aminopyridine (potassium channel blocker). It is flagged as toxic.

Research & Evidence

4-Aminopyridine is a small organic compound that blocks voltage-gated potassium channels, which prolongs nerve action potentials and can enhance conduction in damaged nerves. In its pharmaceutical form (fampridine or dalfampridine) it is used to improve walking speed in some people with multiple sclerosis, and it has also been used as a research tool and as an avian/rodent control agent.

Toxicity & Safety

4-Aminopyridine has a narrow therapeutic window and is toxic in overdose, with seizures and cardiac effects being the principal dangers. It is used medically only under supervision and at controlled doses.
