Compound Monograph
Anhalinine
Anhalinine is a minor tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid found in peyote and related cacti.
Classification
Anhalinine is a tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid, part of the alkaloids class. Nitrogen-containing, often bitter and physiologically potent compounds — the group behind many of the strongest plant medicines and poisons.
Where Does It Come From? (1)
Anhalinine is a naturally occurring tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid, found in Peyote. It is flagged as moderately toxic.
Research & Evidence
Anhalinine is one of the many minor tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids of peyote (Lophophora williamsii), occurring alongside mescaline and related compounds such as anhalonine and anhalonidine. Unlike mescaline, these isoquinoline alkaloids are not considered the source of peyote’s psychedelic effect; anhalinine is a structural relative present in small amounts and is not well characterised on its own.
