Anthranilic acid

Anthranilic acid is an aromatic amino acid that serves as a biosynthetic precursor of tryptophan and many plant alkaloids.

Where Does It Come From?

Anthranilic acid is a naturally occurring (and made in the body) aromatic amino acid (aminobenzoic acid). It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

Anthranilic acid (2-aminobenzoic acid) is a small aromatic compound that occurs widely in nature and plays a central biosynthetic role: it is an intermediate in the production of the amino acid tryptophan and a precursor of many plant alkaloids and microbial metabolites. It is also used industrially, for example in dye and fragrance manufacture. Its derivatives include several pharmaceuticals.

Toxicity & Safety

Anthranilic acid is a naturally occurring metabolite of low toxicity in the amounts normally encountered. It is not associated with significant hazard at dietary or environmental levels.
