Compound Monograph
Catechin (C)
Catechin is a flavan-3-ol flavonoid abundant in cocoa, tea and many fruits, valued as a dietary antioxidant.
Where Does It Come From? (3)
Catechin (C) is a naturally occurring flavonoid (flavan-3-ol), found in Cacao, Green tea and Apples. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).
Research & Evidence
Catechin is a flavan-3-ol, one of the simplest flavonoids, and is a notable polyphenol of cocoa as well as tea, apples and grapes. It is one of the monomeric building blocks of the condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) found in these foods. Catechins are widely studied as dietary antioxidants, particularly in the context of cocoa and tea polyphenols.
Toxicity & Safety
Catechin is a common dietary flavonoid that is well tolerated as part of ordinary food intake, and animal studies indicate very low acute toxicity. Ordinary dietary amounts are not a safety concern.
