Compound Monograph
Catechin gallate (CG)
Catechin gallate is a gallate ester of catechin, one of the minor catechins found in green tea.
Where Does It Come From? (1)
Catechin gallate (CG) is a naturally occurring flavonoid (flavan-3-ol gallate ester), found in Green tea. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).
Research & Evidence
Catechin gallate is a flavan-3-ol formed by esterifying catechin with gallic acid. It is one of the minor catechins of green tea, occurring alongside the more abundant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate. Like the other tea catechins it is studied chiefly for antioxidant activity, though it has been investigated far less than the major tea catechins.
Toxicity & Safety
As a minor constituent of green tea consumed in small dietary amounts, catechin gallate is not associated with notable toxicity at ordinary intakes. An isolated-compound safety profile has not been well characterised.
