Citicoline (CDP-Choline)
Citicoline (CDP-choline) is a choline-donor nootropic studied for memory and focus, with a few real placebo-controlled cognition and stroke trials behind it.
What Is Citicoline (CDP-Choline)?
Citicoline is a naturally occurring choline-cytidine compound (cytidine-5’-diphosphocholine) sold as a cholinergic nootropic. It supplies choline for acetylcholine synthesis and cytidine for phospholipid (phosphatidylcholine) membrane turnover, which is the usual rationale for its use in focus, memory and brain-recovery contexts. Unlike most nootropics in this class, citicoline actually has some placebo-controlled human data — though it is modest and the strongest trials are industry-funded.
Evidence
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 100 healthy older adults with age-associated memory impairment reported that 500 mg/day of citicoline for 12 weeks improved composite and episodic memory versus placebo 1Reference 1RCTCiticoline and Memory Function in Healthy Older Adults — randomised controlled trialView study →. Citicoline has also been studied for cognitive and behavioural disturbances in chronic cerebral disorders of the elderly, where a Cochrane review found some short-term memory/behaviour benefit but noted evidence limitations 2Reference 2Systematic reviewCytidinediphosphocholine (CDP-choline) for cognitive and behavioural disturbances associated with chronic cerebral disorders in the elderly — systematic reviewView study →. It has additionally been trialled in acute ischaemic stroke and other neurological settings; results there are mixed and are not covered in this quick pass. Marketing often implies broad “focus” and “energy” benefits in healthy young adults — that specific claim was not backed by a citable trial in this pass.
Dosage & Safety
Studied doses commonly fall around 250–500 mg/day; the memory trial above used 500 mg/day 1Reference 1RCTCiticoline and Memory Function in Healthy Older Adults — randomised controlled trialView study →. This is not a personal recommendation. Citicoline was generally well tolerated in trials. Drug interactions, pregnancy/lactation safety and long-term use were not assessed in this pass — treat as not established here.
