Coluracetam

A racetam and choline-uptake enhancer (originally MKC-231 / BCI-540) with animal cognition data but essentially no published human efficacy trials.

What Is Coluracetam?

Coluracetam (originally coded MKC-231, later BCI-540) is a racetam-class compound and high-affinity choline uptake enhancer, sold as a research nootropic for memory and — anecdotally — visual effects. It was first investigated by Mitsubishi Tanabe for Alzheimer’s disease and later licensed for major depressive disorder, but development was discontinued. It is best understood as a research chemical: its mechanism is characterised mainly in animals, and there is essentially no published human efficacy evidence to support the popular claims made for it.

Evidence

That is the basis for its “choline uptake” reputation. However, this is animal data, and the human story is much thinner: the compound’s clinical development for cognition and for depression was discontinued, and I did not find a published, peer-reviewed human efficacy trial for coluracetam in this quick pass. The widely repeated claims about improved cognition, mood, and especially enhanced/vivid vision in humans are, as far as I could verify, based on animal work and user anecdote rather than any citable human trial — they should not be treated as established. Its toxicology, pharmacokinetics and long-term safety in humans are not well characterised.

Dosage & Safety

Because there is no established human dosing literature I can verify, no dosage range is given here; community dosing figures exist but are not backed by citable clinical trials, so stating one would imply an evidence base that does not exist. Coluracetam is a research chemical: it is not an approved medicine or dietary supplement, consumer-product purity is unverified, and its human safety profile is essentially uncharacterised (toxicity, drug interactions, and pregnancy safety are not established).
