Compound Monograph
Danthron
Danthron is a dihydroxyanthraquinone formerly used as a stimulant laxative and found in some plants and lichens.
Where Does It Come From? (1)
Danthron is a naturally occurring anthraquinone, found in Lichens and some higher plants. It is flagged as a known carcinogen.
Research & Evidence
Danthron (1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone) is an anthraquinone that was historically used as a stimulant laxative, where it acts on the colon to increase motility and fluid secretion. It is structurally related to the active aglycones of senna and other anthraquinone-containing laxative plants, and the compound also occurs in certain lichens and plants.
Toxicity & Safety
Danthron was withdrawn from general use in many countries after animal studies indicated carcinogenic potential, and its use is now largely restricted (for example to palliative care in some settings). It should not be regarded as a casual or over-the-counter laxative.
