Gallocatechin gallate (GCG)

A galloylated flavan-3-ol from tea, the gallate ester of gallocatechin and an isomer of the green-tea catechin EGCG.

Where Does It Come From? (1)

Gallocatechin gallate (GCG) is a naturally occurring flavonoid (flavan-3-ol gallate), found in Green tea. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

Gallocatechin gallate is a gallate ester of gallocatechin and one of the catechin polyphenols found in tea. It is a stereoisomer of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most-studied green-tea catechin, and it forms in tea partly through epimerisation during heating. Like the other tea catechins, it shows antioxidant activity in laboratory assays and is studied as part of tea’s polyphenol fraction.

Toxicity & Safety

As a constituent of ordinary tea, gallocatechin gallate is regarded as well tolerated at the levels obtained from beverages. Dedicated high-dose human safety data are limited.
