Hastatoside
An iridoid glycoside found in vervain, studied alongside verbenalin in connection with the plant's reputed sleep-promoting properties.
Classification
Hastatoside is an iridoid glycoside, part of the terpenoids class. The largest class of plant compounds, built from five-carbon isoprene units — the essential-oil aromatics, resins, bitter principles, saponins, and plant sterols.
Where Does It Come From? (2)
Hastatoside is a naturally occurring iridoid glycoside, found in Blue vervain and Vervain. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).
Research & Evidence
Hastatoside is an iridoid glycoside characteristic of Verbena species, including blue vervain. It occurs together with verbenalin, and the two compounds have been examined in connection with vervain’s traditional reputation as a mild relaxing and sleep-supporting herb. Beyond this, little is firmly established about the isolated compound.
Toxicity & Safety
Hastatoside has not been characterised in detail for safety on its own. Vervain itself is generally regarded as well tolerated in customary use.
