Ibogaline

Ibogaline is a minor iboga-type indole alkaloid found alongside ibogaine in the iboga shrub.

Classification

Ibogaline is an iboga (monoterpenoid indole) alkaloid, part of the alkaloids class. Nitrogen-containing, often bitter and physiologically potent compounds — the group behind many of the strongest plant medicines and poisons.

Where Does It Come From? (1)

Ibogaline is a naturally occurring iboga (monoterpenoid indole) alkaloid, found in Iboga. It is flagged as moderately toxic.

Research & Evidence

Ibogaline is one of the minor iboga alkaloids that occurs alongside ibogaine in the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga. It is closely related to ibogaine, carrying an additional methoxy group, and is presumed to contribute to the overall pharmacology of crude iboga extracts, but it has been little studied in isolation and its individual effects in humans are not well established.

Toxicity & Safety

The safety profile of ibogaline on its own has not been characterised in detail. By analogy with related iboga alkaloids it should be regarded with caution, particularly given the cardiac concerns associated with ibogaine.
