Compound Monograph
Isolobelanine
Isolobelanine is a minor piperidine alkaloid of Lobelia, structurally related to lobelanine.
Classification
Isolobelanine is a piperidine alkaloid, part of the alkaloids class. Nitrogen-containing, often bitter and physiologically potent compounds — the group behind many of the strongest plant medicines and poisons.
Where Does It Come From? (1)
Isolobelanine is a naturally occurring piperidine alkaloid, found in Lobelia. It is flagged as moderately toxic.
Research & Evidence
Isolobelanine is a minor piperidine alkaloid isolated from Lobelia species, closely related in structure to lobelanine and the better-known lobeline. Little is established about it independently of the wider group of Lobelia alkaloids.
Toxicity & Safety
As a Lobelia alkaloid it should be treated with the same caution as the plant’s other piperidine alkaloids, which can cause nausea, vomiting and other effects in excess. Its individual toxicology has not been well characterised.
