Compound Monograph

Lobelanine

Lobelanine is a piperidine alkaloid of Lobelia, a biosynthetic relative of lobeline.

Classification

Lobelanine is a piperidine alkaloid, part of the alkaloids class. Nitrogen-containing, often bitter and physiologically potent compounds — the group behind many of the strongest plant medicines and poisons.

Where Does It Come From? (1)

Lobelanine is a naturally occurring piperidine alkaloid, found in Lobelia. It is flagged as moderately toxic.

Lobelia

Research & Evidence

Lobelanine is a piperidine alkaloid found in Lobelia inflata and related species. It is a diketone closely related to lobeline and lobelanidine and is part of the same biosynthetic family of Lobelia alkaloids. It is a minor constituent and has been little studied in its own right.

Toxicity & Safety

As with other Lobelia alkaloids, lobelanine should be treated with caution, since the plant’s alkaloids can provoke nausea and vomiting and have effects at nicotinic receptors. Its individual toxicology is not well characterised.
