meta-Octopamine

meta-Octopamine (norfenefrine) is a trace amine and sympathomimetic phenethylamine related to noradrenaline.

Where Does It Come From?

meta-Octopamine is a naturally occurring (and made in the body) phenethylamine (trace amine). It is flagged as moderately toxic.

Research & Evidence

meta-Octopamine, better known as norfenefrine, is a phenethylamine closely related to noradrenaline, differing by the position of a hydroxyl group on the ring. It is a sympathomimetic trace amine and has been used pharmaceutically in some countries as a vasopressor to raise blood pressure. Its biological actions overlap with those of the adrenergic system.

Toxicity & Safety

As a sympathomimetic agent it can raise blood pressure and heart rate, so the relevant cautions are those for adrenergic drugs. It has not been characterised as a recreational substance.
