Piperidine

Piperidine is a simple six-membered nitrogen heterocycle that forms the structural core of many natural and synthetic alkaloids.

Where Does It Come From? (1)

Piperidine is a naturally occurring heterocyclic amine, found in Black pepper. It is flagged as moderately toxic.

Research & Evidence

Piperidine is a saturated six-membered ring with one nitrogen atom. The free amine has a characteristic pepper-like odour and is found in trace amounts in black pepper, from which it takes its name. Its principal importance is structural: the piperidine ring is a recurring scaffold in a huge range of alkaloids and pharmaceuticals, and the compound itself is widely used as a solvent and reagent in organic chemistry rather than as a remedy.

Toxicity & Safety

Piperidine is a volatile, flammable and corrosive liquid that is irritating to skin, eyes and the respiratory tract, and it is handled as a hazardous laboratory chemical. It is not used as a dietary supplement.
