Sulbutiamine

Sulbutiamine is a synthetic, lipophilic derivative of vitamin B1 (thiamine) taken for fatigue, asthenia and motivation.

What Is Sulbutiamine?

Sulbutiamine is a synthetic, fat-soluble derivative of thiamine (vitamin B1) — two thiamine molecules joined by a disulfide bridge — developed to cross the blood–brain barrier more readily than thiamine itself. It is taken mainly for fatigue (asthenia), low motivation and mild cognitive complaints. Evidence

Sulbutiamine has been studied chiefly in asthenia rather than in healthy cognitive enhancement. Its widely repeated use for “energy” and “motivation” in healthy people is largely extrapolated from these clinical populations and mechanistic reasoning; I did not find a robust randomised trial in healthy adults in this quick pass, so those claims should be read as plausible but not well-evidenced.

Dosage & Safety

It is sold over the counter as a supplement in some markets and as a medicine (e.g. Arcalion/Enerion) in others. Sulbutiamine is generally described as well tolerated in short-term use, but long-term safety, interactions and use in pregnancy are not well characterised and should be considered not established in this pass. Because it addresses symptoms of fatigue rather than any underlying cause, persistent fatigue warrants proper medical evaluation. Toxicity has not been formally characterised here.
