Compound Monograph
Tabernanthine
Tabernanthine is an iboga-type indole alkaloid related to ibogaine, found in plants of the genus Tabernanthe.
Classification
Tabernanthine is an iboga-type indole alkaloid, part of the alkaloids class. Nitrogen-containing, often bitter and physiologically potent compounds — the group behind many of the strongest plant medicines and poisons.
Where Does It Come From? (1)
Tabernanthine is a naturally occurring iboga-type indole alkaloid, found in Iboga. It is flagged as moderately toxic.
Research & Evidence
Tabernanthine is an iboga-type indole alkaloid structurally related to ibogaine and found in Tabernanthe species. Like other iboga alkaloids it has been studied chiefly in a pharmacological context, but it is far less characterised than ibogaine and relatively little about its effects in humans is firmly established.
Toxicity & Safety
Iboga alkaloids as a class can affect cardiac conduction, and the safety profile of tabernanthine specifically is not well characterised. Caution is warranted.
