Thymalin

Thymalin is a thymus-derived peptide bioregulator studied mainly by Russian researchers for immune restoration and ageing; it is a research/prescription peptide (mostly ex-US), not an approved dietary supplement.

What Is Thymalin?

Thymalin is a peptide preparation extracted from calf thymus (a mixture of low-molecular-weight thymic peptides) developed and studied primarily in Russia as an immune “bioregulator.” It is associated with the Khavinson school of peptide-bioregulator research and is used clinically in Russia and some neighbouring countries, but it is not an FDA-approved drug and is not an approved dietary supplement in the West. It is promoted for immune restoration, recovery, and healthy ageing; much of that reputation rests on older Russian-language literature that is difficult to independently appraise.

Evidence

The best-known human data are from a long-term Russian study reporting that thymalin (alone or with the pineal peptide epithalamin) was associated with reduced mortality in elderly subjects over several years of follow-up 1Reference 1Khavinson VK · 2003ObservationalPeptides of pineal gland and thymus prolong human life — cohort/observationalView study → — a striking claim that has not, to my knowledge, been replicated in independent Western randomised trials, so it should be read cautiously. More recently, a prospective single-blind randomised controlled trial in older patients with severe COVID-19 reported faster clinical recovery and improved immune markers (lymphocyte counts, CRP, D-dimer) in the thymalin group versus standard care, with no attributed adverse events 2Reference 2Kuznik BI et al et al. · 2021RCTPeptide Drug Thymalin Regulates Immune Status in Severe COVID-19 Older Patients — randomised/RCTView study →. This is a small, single-centre trial rather than confirmatory evidence. Broad anti-ageing and general immune-boosting claims common in peptide marketing go beyond what these limited studies establish, and I did not find large, independent, high-quality trials in this quick pass.

Dosage & Safety

Doses in the literature are given intramuscularly in courses (typically a few to ~10 mg daily for several days, repeated periodically) and come from clinical/experimental settings — not a personal recommendation.
