What Is Thymosin Alpha-1?
Thymosin alpha-1 (thymalfasin, brand name Zadaxin) is a synthetic 28-amino-acid peptide corresponding to a fragment of the naturally occurring thymic hormone prothymosin alpha, used clinically as an immunomodulator. Unlike most peptides marketed to biohackers, it is an actual approved drug in more than 30 countries — indicated for chronic hepatitis B, used as a vaccine adjuvant, and studied as add-on therapy in sepsis and cancer. It is not approved as a drug in the United States and is not an approved dietary supplement anywhere. Its broad immune-restoring reputation rests on a genuine but mixed clinical evidence base.
Evidence
The clearest human data are in critical care. Thymosin alpha-1 is also approved for chronic hepatitis B on the basis of randomised trials showing improved virological response, which underpins its regulatory approvals abroad. Broader anti-ageing, general “immune-boosting” and cancer-cure claims common in peptide marketing go well beyond what these trials establish, and I did not find high-quality trials supporting those uses in this quick pass.
Dosage & Safety
Clinical dosing (e.g. 1.6 mg subcutaneously twice weekly for hepatitis B, or higher frequencies in ICU sepsis protocols) comes from trials and regulatory labels and is not a personal recommendation. It is a prescription immunomodulator (approved in some countries, not the US) and not an approved dietary supplement; grey-market “research peptide” material is unregulated and of unverified purity.
