Aloin

An anthrone C-glycoside (also called barbaloin) from the bitter leaf exudate of aloe; a stimulant laxative whose use is now restricted over safety concerns.

Classification

Aloin is one of the anthraquinones, part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.
