Angelicin

Angelicin is an angular furanocoumarin found in angelica and other plants of the carrot and legume families.

Classification

Angelicin is a furanocoumarin (angular), part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.

Where Does It Come From? (3)

Angelicin is a naturally occurring furanocoumarin (angular), found in Angelica, Bituminaria / psoralea and 1 other source. It is flagged as moderately toxic.

Research & Evidence

Angelicin is an angular furanocoumarin (an isomer of the linear psoralen) found in angelica and various plants of the carrot (Apiaceae) and legume (Fabaceae) families. Like other furanocoumarins it can absorb ultraviolet light and interact with DNA, and it has been studied for photobiological activity.

Toxicity & Safety

As a furanocoumarin, angelicin can act as a photosensitiser, meaning skin exposure followed by sunlight may provoke irritation or phototoxic reactions. Plants rich in furanocoumarins are a recognised cause of phytophotodermatitis. Care with sun exposure is the main practical caution.
