Cascarosides
The principal anthraquinone (anthrone) glycosides of cascara sagrada bark; hydrolysed in the colon to stimulate peristalsis, they are the basis of cascara’s stimulant-laxative action.
Classification
Cascarosides are anthraquinones, part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.
