Colupulone

Colupulone is one of the beta acids of hops, contributing to the aroma and preservative qualities of hops.

Where Does It Come From? (1)

Colupulone is a naturally occurring beta acid (prenylated phloroglucinol), found in Hops. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

Colupulone is one of the beta acids (lupulones) of hops, a counterpart to the alpha acids such as cohumulone. Unlike the alpha acids, the beta acids contribute little direct bitterness to beer but are of interest for their antimicrobial properties, which help account for the traditional preservative role of hops. It is a minor compound studied mainly in the context of brewing chemistry.

Toxicity & Safety

Colupulone is consumed as part of hops and is not regarded as notably toxic at these levels. A detailed isolated-compound safety profile has not been well characterised.
