Eriodictyol

Eriodictyol is a flavanone from yerba santa and citrus, noted for taste-modifying and antioxidant properties.

Classification

Eriodictyol is a flavonoid (flavanone), part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.

Where Does It Come From? (4)

Eriodictyol is a naturally occurring flavonoid (flavanone), found in Yerba santa, Citrus fruits and 2 other sources. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

Eriodictyol is a flavanone originally characterised from yerba santa (Eriodictyon), from which it takes its name, and also found in citrus and other plants. It is one of several flavonoids reported to mask bitterness, and like related dietary flavanones it has been studied in the laboratory for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory-type activities. Robust clinical evidence for the isolated compound is limited.

Toxicity & Safety

As a minor dietary flavonoid found in citrus and edible plants, eriodictyol is generally regarded as low risk; its isolated safety profile has not been extensively characterised.
