gamma-Asarone
A phenylpropanoid related to alpha- and beta-asarone, found in calamus and related aromatic plants.
Where Does It Come From? (1)
gamma-Asarone is a naturally occurring phenylpropanoid, found in Calamus. It is flagged as moderately toxic.
Research & Evidence
gamma-Asarone is a phenylpropanoid and a positional isomer of the better-known alpha- and beta-asarone, occurring in calamus (Acorus calamus) and related aromatic plants. It contributes to the essential-oil character of these plants. Compared with beta-asarone, far less is established about its specific pharmacology.
Toxicity & Safety
The asarones as a group raise safety concerns: beta-asarone in particular has been flagged for genotoxic and carcinogenic potential in animal studies, which is why calamus oil is restricted in foods in some jurisdictions. The specific toxicology of the gamma isomer is less well defined, so prudence is warranted around concentrated calamus preparations.
