Ionine glycosides

Sugar-bound forms of ionone, a fragrant apocarotenoid (carotenoid-derived) compound; several have been isolated from rehmannia root. Beyond contributing aroma, their pharmacology is not well established.

Classification

Ionine glycosides are carotenoids, part of the terpenoids class. The largest class of plant compounds, built from five-carbon isoprene units — the essential-oil aromatics, resins, bitter principles, saponins, and plant sterols.
