What Is L-Isoleucine?
L-Isoleucine is an essential branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) — one of the three, alongside leucine and valine, that make up the BCAA group. Being essential, it must come from dietary protein (meat, eggs, dairy, soy, legumes). It’s used mainly as a substrate for muscle energy metabolism and appears to have a distinct role in promoting glucose uptake into muscle.
What It’s Used For
Isoleucine is rarely taken alone; it’s supplied within BCAA and essential-amino-acid (EAA) blends aimed at exercise performance, recovery and lean-mass support. As with the BCAA group generally, isolated supplementation is a weaker strategy for muscle growth than a complete protein or full EAA source — leucine is the primary muscle-protein-synthesis trigger, while isoleucine’s more characteristic role is metabolic (glucose handling).
How It Works
Like the other BCAAs, isoleucine is metabolised largely in skeletal muscle rather than the liver, where it can be oxidised for energy during exercise. It is both glucogenic and ketogenic, and preclinical work shows it can stimulate glucose uptake into muscle independently of leucine’s mTOR signalling — the basis of its “blood-sugar” reputation, though human evidence for that is still limited.
Dosage
Isoleucine is obtained from ordinary dietary protein and, in blends, is commonly dosed as part of a 2:1:1 leucine:isoleucine:valine ratio within a 5–10 g/day BCAA serving. These figures are reported for context and are not a personal recommendation.
Safety
Isoleucine is an essential nutrient present in everyday dietary protein and is well tolerated in healthy adults at these intakes. As with the BCAA group, very high isolated intakes are an area of ongoing research. Specific drug interactions and safety in pregnancy, kidney or liver disease are pending the detailed research buildout; dietary intake from food is not a concern.
