A simple phenolic aldehyde (4-hydroxybenzaldehyde) found in vanilla and many plants, where it is a biosynthetic precursor to vanillin. Contributes a faint sweet, balsamic aroma and shows mild antioxidant activity.

P-hydroxy-benzaldehyde is one of the phenolic acids, part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.
