The signature nortriterpene saponins of suma (Brazilian ginseng) — a family (pfaffosides A–F and related pfaffic-acid glycosides, built on the C29 nortriterpene pfaffic acid) credited with its adaptogenic and tonic activity.

Pfaffosides are saponins, part of the terpenoids class. The largest class of plant compounds, built from five-carbon isoprene units — the essential-oil aromatics, resins, bitter principles, saponins, and plant sterols.
