Schisantherin A
Schisantherin A is a dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan from schisandra berries.
Where Does It Come From? (2)
Schisantherin A is a naturally occurring lignan (dibenzocyclooctadiene), found in Schisandra / five-flavor berry and 1 other source. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).
Research & Evidence
Schisantherin A is one of the dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans found in the berries of Schisandra chinensis. Along with the other schisandra lignans it is studied for antioxidant, liver-protective and neuroprotective activity in laboratory and animal models. Its specific effects in humans are not well established, and it is generally examined as a marker constituent of schisandra extracts.
Toxicity & Safety
As a constituent of a widely consumed medicinal berry, schisantherin A is regarded as low in toxicity at customary intakes. Like other schisandra lignans it may interact with drug-metabolising liver enzymes, so a theoretical potential for medication interactions exists.
