Steroidal saponins
Soap-like glycosides built on a steroid (spirostane or furostane) backbone, giving foaming, membrane-active properties. Many are studied for hormonal, anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-modulating effects, and serve as feedstock for steroid synthesis.
Classification
Steroidal saponins are saponins, part of the terpenoids class. The largest class of plant compounds, built from five-carbon isoprene units — the essential-oil aromatics, resins, bitter principles, saponins, and plant sterols.
