Zinc citrate is elemental zinc bound to citric acid — a well-absorbed, moderately zinc-dense salt (~31% elemental zinc by weight as the trihydrate, ~34% anhydrous) that is a common all-purpose choice for daily supplementation. It is slightly soluble in water and has better sensory properties (less metallic taste) than gluconate or sulfate in syrups and lozenges, which is part of why it is used in liquid pediatric formulations. Absorption & Tolerability
The best evidence on this form is a stable-isotope tracer study, which places citrate among the better-absorbed zinc salts. In a randomized, double-masked, three-way crossover in 15 healthy adults dosed with 10 mg zinc without food, median fractional absorption from zinc citrate was 61.3% (IQR 56.6–71.0) — statistically indistinguishable from zinc gluconate at 60.9% (50.6–71.7) and significantly higher than zinc oxide at 49.9% (40.9–57.7; P < 0.01) 1Reference 1RCTZinc absorption by young adults from supplemental zinc citrate is comparable with that from zinc gluconate and higher than from zinc oxide — randomized crossover, stable-isotope studyView study →. Two caveats keep this in perspective. First, an older four-week crossover trial (50 mg/day elemental) using indirect status markers — hair, urine, and erythrocyte zinc — found significant rises only with zinc picolinate, with citrate not differing from placebo on those endpoints 3Reference 3RCTComparative absorption of zinc picolinate, zinc citrate and zinc gluconate in humans — double-blind crossover trialView study →; this study predates modern isotope methods and measured status change rather than fractional absorption, so it is weaker evidence and its “picolinate is superior” conclusion has not been reliably replicated. Second, absorption is matrix-dependent: an in vitro dialyzability study in infant formula ranked oxide and gluconate above citrate 4Reference 4In vitroIn vitro dialyzability of zinc from different salts used in the supplementation of infant formulas — in vitroView study → — the opposite of the fasted human tracer result — illustrating that food matrix and phytate content shift the ranking more than the salt does. In practice, at supplemental doses in adults, citrate is well absorbed and well tolerated, with GI upset (the common acute effect of any zinc salt) being uncommon at typical doses.

What the Evidence Says
There is essentially no citrate-specific clinical efficacy literature. The large body of zinc trials — common-cold lozenges, diarrhea in children, deficiency correction, immune support — was run predominantly with acetate, gluconate, and sulfate, not citrate. Citrate’s case rests on two links: (1) it delivers zinc to the bloodstream about as efficiently as gluconate 1Reference 1RCTZinc absorption by young adults from supplemental zinc citrate is comparable with that from zinc gluconate and higher than from zinc oxide — randomized crossover, stable-isotope studyView study →, and (2) once absorbed, the zinc ion is identical regardless of the carrier salt. So the mineral’s benefits reasonably generalize to citrate to the extent they are driven by systemic repletion — but this is inference from bioequivalent absorption, not direct trial evidence for the citrate form. Dosage
Dosed as elemental zinc, not compound weight — a 31% elemental salt means a 100 mg zinc citrate dose supplies ~31 mg elemental zinc, so always read the elemental figure on the label. Typical supplemental range is 15–30 mg elemental/day, within a studied span of 8–40 mg/day. Safety
Zinc citrate carries the general zinc cautions rather than any salt-specific hazard. GI upset (nausea, mild cramping) is the common acute effect and is minimized by taking it with a small amount of food; because it is well absorbed, it is not notably better or worse tolerated than gluconate. The dose-limiting chronic concern is copper depletion — sustained intake at or above ~40 mg/day elemental can impair copper absorption and cause copper-deficiency anemia and neurologic effects 7Reference 7Zinc — Fact Sheet, adverse effects and copper interactionView study →. Zinc also competes with iron for absorption. On timing, separate zinc from iron and calcium supplements, and from tetracycline/fluoroquinolone antibiotics and bisphosphonates (zinc chelates them and blunts drug absorption) by 2+ hours.
Pregnancy & lactation
Likely acceptable within the RDA; do not exceed the UL without clinical guidance. Zinc is an essential nutrient in pregnancy and the RDA rises modestly (~11–12 mg/day), which prenatal formulas cover. There is nothing about the citrate salt specifically that raises or lowers this — the guidance is the mineral’s. High supplemental doses are not advised in pregnancy because of the copper-depletion risk; decisions here belong with a qualified clinician who has the full clinical picture.
Interactions were assessed — copper and iron (competitive absorption), and chelation with tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and bisphosphonates; these are class effects of zinc, not the citrate salt. Pregnancy and lactation were assessed and summarized above; the evidence is the mineral’s, with no citrate-specific data. Absence of citrate-specific adverse-event reports is not evidence of extra safety — the salt has simply not been studied separately; its safety profile is zinc’s.
