Zinc sulfate is cheap, freely water-soluble, and well absorbed — the workhorse salt that most of the older zinc research was actually run with. Elemental content depends on hydration: the monohydrate is ~36% elemental zinc by weight, while the heptahydrate is ~22%, so always read the elemental figure on the label rather than the compound weight. Because it dissolves readily and releases zinc quickly, the common acute effect is nausea or stomach upset, most pronounced on an empty stomach. Safety
Zinc sulfate carries the general zinc cautions rather than any salt-specific hazard. GI upset (nausea, mild cramping) is the common acute effect and is minimized by taking it with food. On timing, separate zinc from iron and calcium supplements, and from tetracycline/fluoroquinolone antibiotics, by 2+ hours, since zinc competes with or chelates them.
