Anthrone glycosides
Anthranoid laxatives in which an anthrone is bound to sugar; in the gut they release active anthrones that stimulate colonic peristalsis, the stimulant-laxative principles of cascara, senna and related barks. Fresh (unprocessed) anthrones can cause griping and vomiting.
Classification
Anthrone glycosides are anthraquinones, part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.
Where Does It Come From? (3)
Anthrone glycosides are anthraquinones, found in Cascara sagrada, Frangula and Senna.
