β-Sitosterol

β-Sitosterol is one of the most common plant sterols (phytosterols) in the human diet.

Where Does It Come From? (4)

β-Sitosterol is a naturally occurring phytosterol, found in Nettle, African dream herb, Blue lotus flower and 1 other source. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

β-Sitosterol is among the most abundant phytosterols, plant counterparts of cholesterol that occur widely in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils and many herbs. It is well known for its ability to reduce intestinal absorption of cholesterol, the basis for the cholesterol-lowering claims made for plant sterols added to foods. It has also been studied in the context of benign prostatic hyperplasia, where some trials of sterol-rich extracts have reported symptomatic benefit.

Toxicity & Safety

β-Sitosterol is a normal dietary component and is generally regarded as having low toxicity and good tolerability. The rare inherited condition sitosterolemia, in which plant sterols accumulate abnormally, is an exception relevant only to a small group of people.
