γ-Terpinene

γ-Terpinene is a monoterpene found in citrus peel oils and many culinary herbs.

Classification

γ-Terpinene is a monoterpene, part of the terpenoids class. The largest class of plant compounds, built from five-carbon isoprene units — the essential-oil aromatics, resins, bitter principles, saponins, and plant sterols.

Where Does It Come From? (6)

γ-Terpinene is a naturally occurring monoterpene, found in Marjoram, Citrus peel oils, Cumin and other Apiaceae herbs and 3 other sources. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

γ-Terpinene is a monoterpene hydrocarbon found widely in essential oils, including those of citrus peel, cumin, marjoram and tea tree, where it contributes to aroma. It is one of several terpinene isomers and is a common volatile component of culinary and aromatic plants. It has been studied for antioxidant behaviour in oil systems, but little is firmly established about effects of the isolated compound in humans.

Toxicity & Safety

As a common constituent of foods and essential oils, γ-terpinene is generally regarded as having low toxicity at the levels normally encountered. Concentrated essential oils should be handled with the usual care given to volatile terpenes.
