Harmala alkaloids

A group of β-carboline alkaloids (chiefly harmine, harmaline, harmalol and tetrahydroharmine) named for Syrian rue; they are reversible MAO-A inhibitors, which is why ayahuasca brews use them to render the DMT of companion plants orally active. Psychoactive and potentially hazardous with other drugs.

Classification

Harmala alkaloids are indole alkaloids, part of the alkaloids class. Nitrogen-containing, often bitter and physiologically potent compounds — the group behind many of the strongest plant medicines and poisons.

Where Does It Come From? (4)

Harmala alkaloids are indole alkaloids, found in Ayahuasca vine, Passionflower, Syrian rue and 1 other source. They are flagged as moderately toxic and psychedelic.
