Indole alkaloids

A very large class of nitrogen compounds built on the indole ring, derived from tryptophan; the group includes many potent plant drugs — among them the kratom and periwinkle alkaloids — with effects ranging from analgesic to cytotoxic.

Classification

Indole alkaloids are a class of plant constituents. Tryptophan-derived alkaloids — the harmala β-carbolines, mitragynine, vincamine, and the cryptolepine series.
