Pentagalloylglucose

A hydrolysable gallotannin built from glucose esterified with five gallic-acid units, found in peony and many tannin-rich plants. A potent antioxidant studied for anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity.

Classification

Pentagalloylglucose is one of the tannins, part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.
