Scutellarein

Scutellarein is a flavone aglycone found in skullcap and related plants, the parent compound of the glycoside scutellarin.

Classification

Scutellarein is a flavonoid (flavone), part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.

Where Does It Come From? (2)

Scutellarein is a naturally occurring flavonoid (flavone), found in Skullcap and 1 other source. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

Scutellarein is a flavone (6-hydroxyapigenin) occurring in Scutellaria species such as skullcap, where it is found both free and as its glucuronide scutellarin. It has been studied in laboratory settings for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, but human data are limited.

Toxicity & Safety

As a dietary flavonoid found in traditional herbal preparations, scutellarein is generally regarded as low in toxicity, though its safety profile in isolation has not been formally established.
