Compound Monograph
Terpinolene
Terpinolene is a monoterpene with a fresh, piney-floral aroma found in marjoram, conifers and many essential oils.
Classification
Terpinolene is a monoterpene, part of the terpenoids class. The largest class of plant compounds, built from five-carbon isoprene units — the essential-oil aromatics, resins, bitter principles, saponins, and plant sterols.
Where Does It Come From? (4)
Terpinolene is a naturally occurring monoterpene, found in Marjoram, Conifers, citrus and tea tree and 2 other sources. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).
Research & Evidence
Terpinolene is a monoterpene that contributes a fresh, sweetly piney and floral note to the aroma of many plants, including marjoram, conifers and tea tree. It is widely used as a fragrance ingredient and has been examined in the laboratory for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.
Toxicity & Safety
Terpinolene is generally regarded as low in toxicity at the levels used in foods and fragrances. Like other monoterpenes it can oxidise on exposure to air, and the oxidation products may be more irritating to the skin.
