Compound Monograph
Aucubin
Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside found in mullein, plantain and many related plants.
Classification
Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside, part of the terpenoids class. The largest class of plant compounds, built from five-carbon isoprene units — the essential-oil aromatics, resins, bitter principles, saponins, and plant sterols.
Where Does It Come From? (6)
Aucubin is a naturally occurring iridoid glycoside, found in Mullein, Wood betony, Plantain and 3 other sources. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).
Research & Evidence
Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside found across many plants, including mullein, wood betony and the plantains (Plantago species). Iridoids of this kind are common markers of their source plants and form part of the constituent profiles often associated with soothing and anti-inflammatory traditional uses. Aucubin has been studied in the laboratory for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
Toxicity & Safety
Aucubin is a widespread plant iridoid present in herbs and foods of long-standing use and is regarded as low in toxicity at the levels normally encountered in whole-plant preparations.
