Formononetin

Formononetin is an isoflavone phytoestrogen found in red clover and other legumes.

Classification

Formononetin is a flavonoid (isoflavone), part of the phenolics class. Antioxidant compounds built around one or more phenol rings — the flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, coumarins, and pigments behind much of a plant's protective chemistry.

Where Does It Come From? (4)

Formononetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid (isoflavone), found in Red clover, Other legumes and 2 other sources. It is well tolerated orally (low toxicity).

Research & Evidence

Formononetin is an isoflavone found in red clover and various legumes. It is a phytoestrogen, meaning it can interact weakly with oestrogen receptors, and in the body it can be converted to the related isoflavone daidzein. It is one of the constituents studied in connection with red clover preparations used for menopausal and other indications, though clinical evidence for the isolated compound is limited.

Toxicity & Safety

As a dietary isoflavone, formononetin is generally regarded as low risk at the levels obtained from foods and herbal preparations. Because of its phytoestrogenic activity, people with hormone-sensitive conditions may wish to be cautious with concentrated isoflavone supplements and seek individual advice.
