Sesquiterpenes
Sesquiterpenes are a large class of fifteen-carbon terpenoids that contribute to the aroma and bioactivity of many plants.
Classification
Sesquiterpenes are a class of plant constituents. Fifteen-carbon terpenes giving woody, spicy essential-oil notes; often anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial.

Research & Evidence
Sesquiterpenes are a broad family of terpenoids built from three isoprene units (fifteen carbons), occurring widely in essential oils and resins. They include both simple hydrocarbons and oxygenated derivatives (sesquiterpene lactones), and individual members vary enormously in their properties — from fragrance components to compounds with anti-inflammatory or bitter activity. Because the term covers hundreds of distinct molecules, general statements about “sesquiterpenes” describe the class rather than any single effect.
Toxicity & Safety
As a class, common dietary and aromatic sesquiterpenes are well tolerated, though specific members — particularly some sesquiterpene lactones — can cause contact allergy or other effects. Toxicity therefore depends on the individual compound.
