Medical Disclaimer

The Sunlight Experiment publishes herbal and nutritional research for education only. It is not medical advice and does not replace care from a qualified practitioner.

The Sunlight Experiment publishes educational research. It does not provide medical advice, and nothing on this site should be used to diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure any disease or condition.

What This Site Is

This is a reference library. Each monograph sets out what a plant or compound is, how it has traditionally been used, what the pharmacology suggests, and what the published research has actually shown — with the primary literature cited throughout so you can read it yourself.

Our aim is to describe the evidence accurately, including where it is thin, preliminary, or contradictory. A herb appearing on this site is not an endorsement of it, and a dose recorded here is a record of what was studied or traditionally used, not a recommendation for you.

What This Site Is Not

It is not a substitute for a consultation. Only a doctor, pharmacist, or qualified herbal practitioner who knows your history, your medication list, and your current health can tell you whether a given herb or supplement is appropriate for you.

Talk to a healthcare professional before starting anything described here — and especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, giving something to a child, living with a chronic illness, scheduled for surgery, or taking prescription medication. Herb–drug interactions are real and can be serious. Several plants documented on this site meaningfully alter how the liver metabolises common prescriptions.

Never delay or stop prescribed treatment on the strength of something you read here.

Accuracy & Limits

Research is written and reviewed by Justin Cooke, BHSc, a practicing herbalist with a background in health science, and is cited to the primary literature rather than to folklore or marketing copy. Even so, the evidence base moves, individual pages may lag behind newer findings, and no page here covers every possible use, interaction, precaution, or adverse effect of the substance it describes. Errors are possible. If you find one, please tell us — corrections are welcome and we would rather fix them.

Where this site links to outside sources, studies, or suppliers, that is a pointer to the material, not a warranty of its accuracy or an endorsement of a product.

Regulatory Note

Statements on this site have not been evaluated by the US Food and Drug Administration, the UK MHRA, the TGA, or any equivalent regulator. Herbal products and dietary supplements are not regulated as pharmaceuticals in most countries: potency, purity, and labelling accuracy vary widely between manufacturers, and adulteration and mislabelling are documented problems in this industry.

In an Emergency

If you think you are having a medical emergency or an adverse reaction, contact your local emergency number or poison control centre immediately. Do not rely on this website.

Your Use of This Site

By using The Sunlight Experiment you accept that any decision you make about your health on the basis of what you read here is your own, taken at your own risk.
