Research & Evidence

1-Methylmalate is a methyl ester of malic acid isolated from camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia) juice. In rats it suppressed D-galactosamine-induced liver injury, lowering ALT and AST, while malate, citrate and tartrate tested alongside it did not (PMID 20208347). That selectivity is the reason the compound is singled out from the fruit’s wider organic-acid fraction; the finding is a single animal study and has no human counterpart.

Toxicity & Safety

No isolated-compound toxicity dataset exists. Exposure in food is as a minor juice acid, and the flag reflects that dietary context rather than a characterised safety profile.
