Condition
Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system arising from malignant lymphocytes.
Overview
Aetiology
Lymphoma develops when lymphocytes acquire genetic damage that allows them to proliferate uncontrollably. Common mechanisms include chromosomal translocations, with translocation of the Bcl-2 and Bcl-6 genes being a frequent driver, as well as mutations of genes that regulate cell growth and survival.
Hodgkins Lymphoma
Hodgkin lymphoma is characterized by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells. It tends to be slow growing, occurs more often in younger people, and typically remains fairly localized, spreading in an orderly fashion from one lymph node to the next. It is generally non-fatal, and systemic effects are not common.
Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a diverse group of lymphocyte cancers and is one of the most common malignancies. Compared with Hodgkin lymphoma, it is more likely to be widespread at diagnosis and to behave unpredictably.
Presentation
Symptoms
Lymphoma commonly presents with painless, enlarged lymph nodes, along with systemic “B symptoms” such as fever, drenching night sweats, and unexplained weight loss. Fatigue, generalized itching, and loss of appetite may also occur.

Special Considerations
Although there are plenty of botanical medicines that have shown effectiveness in treating cancers, it is not wise to rely on them as the only treatment for the condition. With cancers, especially aggressive cancer cell lines, treatment should involve radio or chemotherapy. Botanical medicines, adequate nutrition, and lifestyle changes are very important, but should not be solely relied upon.
