Condition
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen, enlarged veins in the lower rectum and anus that can cause bleeding, itching, and discomfort.
Overview
Aetiology
The cause for hemorrhoids are not well understood, but is considered to be associated with straining during defecation.
Hemorrhoids have also been found to be exacerbated by pelvic congestion such as with pregnancy or constipation as well as prostate enlargement.
Presentation
Symptoms
Hemorrhoids commonly cause bright red bleeding during or after defecation, itching, and discomfort around the anus. Internal hemorrhoids may prolapse and be felt as a lump, while external hemorrhoids can become painful, especially if a clot forms within them (thrombosis).
Assessment
Diagnostic Considerations
Diagnosis is usually made on history and examination, including inspection of the anus and a digital rectal examination. Proctoscopy or sigmoidoscopy may be used to confirm internal hemorrhoids and to exclude other causes of rectal bleeding such as malignancy.
