Condition
Edema
Edema is the build-up of excess fluid in the body's tissues, causing visible swelling most often in the legs, ankles, and feet.
Overview
Overview
Edema is the accumulation of excess fluid in the interstitial spaces of the tissues, producing swelling that is most commonly seen in the lower limbs but can affect any part of the body. It is a sign rather than a disease in itself, arising whenever the balance of pressures across the capillaries shifts toward fluid leaving the blood vessels — through raised venous pressure, low blood protein, increased capillary permeability, or impaired lymphatic drainage.
Context
Considerations
Because edema is a manifestation of an underlying process, effective management depends on identifying its cause, which may be cardiac, renal, hepatic, venous, lymphatic, or related to medication. Herbal and lifestyle support is directed at improving circulation and drainage while the primary cause is addressed.
Treatment
Therapeutic Aims
The priorities are to identify and treat the underlying cause, improve the tone of both the blood and lymphatic vessels, support the lymphatic system, and support kidney function where required. These are combined with lifestyle measures such as elevating the legs, hydrotherapy, and compression stockings.
Long term Treatment Goals:
The long-term aims are to keep fluid balance stable, maintain healthy vascular and lymphatic tone, protect the skin of swollen areas from breakdown and infection, and manage the underlying condition driving the fluid retention.
