Subclass of Terpenoids
Sterols & Steroids
Plant sterols and steroidal compounds — phytosterols, ecdysteroids, and the withanolides of ashwagandha.
Overview
About Sterols & Steroids
Sterols are the four-ring steroid nucleus as plants build it. They arise from the same squalene cyclization as the triterpenes but take a distinct route, ending in molecules that mirror animal cholesterol closely enough to compete with it.
Under this heading sit three quite different things: the structural phytosterols of every plant membrane, the insect-moulting ecdysteroids that some plants make defensively, and the steroidal lactones and sapogenins that carry real pharmacology — the withanolides of ashwagandha and the sapogenins behind the steroid-drug industry.
Where Sterols Occur
Phytosterols are near-universal; the more specialized steroids are concentrated in particular plants:
Seed oils, nuts and saw palmetto
beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol
Ashwagandha
the withanolides and sitoindosides
Wild yam (Dioscorea) and fenugreek
diosgenin and its relatives
Spinach, quinoa and Cyanotis
20-hydroxyecdysone
Pharmacological Importance
The phytosterols' best-established effect is competitive: because they resemble cholesterol, they crowd it out of intestinal micelles and reduce its absorption. That is a genuine, dose-dependent LDL-lowering effect and the basis of sterol-fortified foods. Beta-sitosterol also has reasonable trial evidence in benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The withanolides are the actives credited with ashwagandha's adaptogenic and anti-inflammatory profile, with withaferin A the potent, more cytotoxic member and withanolide A the neurotrophic one.
A Persistent Myth Worth Naming
Diosgenin is the industrial feedstock from which progesterone and cortisone were first synthesized — in a chemical plant, over several deliberate steps. The human body cannot perform that conversion.
Wild yam creams and capsules are therefore not a source of progesterone or DHEA, whatever the label implies. It is the single most repeated error about this compound class and worth checking any product claim against.
Toxicity & Safety
Dietary phytosterols are well tolerated, with mild gastrointestinal complaints at high supplemental intake and a theoretical concern about fat-soluble vitamin absorption.
The cardiac glycosides of foxglove and lily of the valley are built on the same steroid nucleus and have their own page. They are the sharp exception in this neighbourhood: narrow-therapeutic-index compounds responsible for serious and fatal poisonings, and never appropriate for self-directed use.

Herbs Containing Sterols & Steroids
60 herbsPlants in the materia medica documented to carry sterols & steroids, with the compounds each one is listed for. The bar counts how many DISTINCT sterols & steroids are on record for a plant, relative to the best-documented — it measures breadth of record, not potency, so a plant with one well-studied compound can outrank a richer source that has simply been analysed less. Where a measured concentration is on record it is quoted inline; most entries have none yet.
